From the Director

At Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM), we are in the throes of one of the most important elections in our state’s history. As we experience unprecedented daily assaults from the Trump administration on our air, land, water and wildlife, we are working hard to elect conservation champions to protect the people and communities of our state.
In the past year, we have seen record voter turnout across the country, and New Mexico is no exception. Our recent municipal elections show that we are on pace with the national trend to elect pro-conservation champions. In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy won his race on a 100% renewable energy platform. Right here in New Mexico, we are seeing the full slate of candidates running on conservation platforms.
Elections are changing, and environmental issues are no longer on the fringe.  Protecting our communities and vital natural resources are at the core of our states’ economy and health. Our CVNM Action Fund endorsed gubernatorial candidate Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham wants New Mexico to be “the greenest state in the country,” and she’s standing up for our issues by keeping renewable energy and healthy communities at the forefront of her campaign.
2018 has also been a ground-breaking year for women running for office. Here in New Mexico, a record number—over 50—have registered as candidates for seats in the New Mexico House of Representatives. Together with our allies, we have helped recruit and support women across the state to run for local and statewide offices.
We have been working in close partnership with communities to make sure our endorsed candidates reflect our people’s deeply-rooted conservation values in our state. In this pivotal election year, we have the opportunity to elect pro-climate champions to the Public Regulation Commission, State Land Office, the House of Representatives and the Governor’s office. If we are successful, we will be well positioned to pass proactive policies to ensure our communities thrive, such as an increase in clean, renewable energy and a statewide methane waste rule for oil and gas production. We are on the precipice of change that will be long lasting for our families and future generations. Transformational change will take all of us rolling up our sleeves. I hope you will get out and vote in the primary election on June 5th.
