Conservation Voters New Mexico is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. The Voting Rights Act marked the culmination of years of struggle by the civil rights movement to put the voting protections contained in the 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution, adopted in 1868 and 1870 respectively, into statute.
Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the agency is proposing a draft rule eliminating the endangerment finding and repealing all resulting greenhouse gas emissions regulations for motor vehicles and engines, in particular the Clean Car and Truck Standards.
President Trump’s budget bill cleared the House on a final and narrow vote of 218-214, concurring with changes made in the U.S. Senate earlier this week. All of the House Democrats and two Republicans, Representative Fitzpatrick (PA) and Representative Massie (KY) voted “no.” The legislation now heads to Trump’s desk for signing, despite widespread backlash and the legislation’s numerous devastating provisions and tremendous fiscal impact. The final package includes provisions that will have a disproportionate impact on New Mexico and low-income families, including slashed funding for Medicaid and SNAP food assistance, repeal of Inflation Reduction Act dollars and tax credits, dismantled programs for workforce training and student loans, and more
Conservation Voters New Mexico Issues Statements on U.S. Senate Passage of Reconciliation Bill

July 1st 2025, the U.S. Senate voted narrowly to pass President Trump’s tax reconciliation package, with Vice President Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The controversial legislation follows weeks of deliberations and has received broad opposition from the public over harmful provisions to cut medicaid funding, gut resources for popular renewable energy and manufacturing projects, and fast-track extractive industry. The legislation now goes back to the U.S. House for concurrence.
On June 13th 2025 America witnessed a horrific political assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark at their home. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were wounded in a separate attack at their home. The suspected assassin has been identified and a search is underway, with a shelter-in-place order in effect. According to police, the attacker may have been planning to target “No Kings” protests scheduled today across Minnesota and the country.
SANTA FE – June 11th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it would roll back two critical standards for power plant pollution. The standards – for existing coal and new gas-fired power plants – regulate mercury, other toxic air pollution, and carbon emissions. The proposed changes would go into effect later this year.
[Washington, D.C.] – With a looming committee vote set for 1:00 AM ET Wednesday (May 21) to move the Republican-led reconciliation bill to the House floor, Conservation Voters New Mexico Chief Operating Officer Molly Taylor released the following statement: “The reconciliation bill is extreme, and out of step with the needs of New Mexico families. It proposes to threaten and gut programs that directly benefit our rural communities, including clean energy investments, public lands, and emergency response. These very same programs are also popular across party lines and are fundamental for a diversified and stable economy.
