Press Release: Bill to protect and restore clean water protections, safeguard drinking water passes second committee

Today (Feb. 13, 2025), the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 6-3 to pass SB 21, a substitute bill combining SB 21 and SB22. The bill will provide critical protections for New Mexico waters. The bills earlier passed the Senate Conservation Committee on two 6-3 votes. The bill will next go to the Senate Finance Committee, which if passed, will proceed to the full Senate for approval and, if passed, move over to the House for committee hearings and a floor vote.

Action Alert: Help Protect New Mexico’s Special Waters

We have a landmark chance to get strong water quality protections for headwater streams on the Jemez, the Rio Hondo and in the Upper Rio Grande. Last month, the Water Quality Control Commission (WQCC) held a hearing on designating the Upper Pecos watershed as an Outstanding Natural Resource Water (ONRW), the most protective water quality designation under the Clean Water Act. There was near-unanimous public comment in support of that designation, including from Conservation Voters, and we expect the WQCC will approve the designation at a future meeting.

Conserving our land and water, and at the same time supporting communities in the necessary and inevitable transition away from dependence on fossil fuels, are priorities that the previous administration not only ignored, but moved backwards on.
