CVNM Urges Legislature To Pass Critical Climate, Democracy, and Water Priorities

Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM) announced several priority policies for the 2026 legislative session to protect New Mexico’s democracy, lands and water, and address the climate crisis. This year’s session convenes at a time of nationwide civil unrest, with state democratic lawmakers committing to prioritize action that protects the state from the harms and impacts of the Trump regime. The 2026 30-day legislative session is focused on fiscal priorities and the state budget. Other priorities were announced today as part of the Governor’s call during the State of the State Address. Those priorities include funding universal childcare, education reforms, road infrastructure, public safety, and more.

Today, the League of Conservation Voters released its annual Clean Energy Successes in the States report. The report details how 30 states, led by state affiliates in the Conservation Voters Movement (CVM), passed, funded, and implemented solutions to lower energy costs, advance clean energy, reduce harmful pollution, and tackle the climate crisis. The Trump administration has blocked clean energy and given handouts to the fossil fuel industry—policies that raise utility bills—even as the 2025 elections highlighted energy affordability as a top concern for people across the country.

CVNM Statement in Response to Water Quality Control Commission Dismissal of Public Comment

November 13, 2025

Today, during a Water Quality Control Commission public meeting, Commission members publicly dismissed and prohibited public comment on oilfield wastewater (misleadingly called produced water) or items pertaining to the agenda. This decision was announced after a long queue of members of the public lined up to speak in objection to the Commission’s July decision to rehear an oilfield wastewater rule adopted in May 2025.

Water Quality Control Commission should reinstate rule

October 24, 2025

We live in a time of profound erosion of faith in public institutions of all kinds and at every level. New Mexico’s Water Quality Control Commission may be the latest victim. In May, the commission adopted a rule prohibiting the discharge of treated and untreated oil field wastewater (misleadingly called “produced water”) to all groundwater and surface water outside oil fields in New Mexico, as well as prohibiting its reuse for industrial projects outside the oil field.

CVNM Statement in Response to Passage of Funding for Public Broadcasting

Overnight, the state legislature passed House Bill 1, appropriating funding to critical public programs that have been stripped of support by Congress and the Trump Administration. Included in the legislation is $5.6 million in dedicated funding for public broadcasting, and $430,000 to support public radio and television in Indigenous communities. The state appropriations fall on the heels of a federal government shutdown due to stalled negotiations in Congress, and an unpopular deeply partisan budget package

The endorsements follow a rigorous process vetting candidates in contested races, including thorough questionnaires and interviews. Las Cruces and Santa Fe have ranked choice voting, allowing voters to cast ballots for multiple candidates in a given race. As a result, CVNM has issued dual endorsements for several races, encouraging voters to support all viable candidates running on pro-environmental platforms.

Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM) proudly endorsed a slate of pro-climate and pro-conservation candidates in the Albuquerque City Council and Mayoral races. The endorsement decision follows a rigorous process to vet eligible candidates, including questionnaires and interviews. Among those endorsed includes incumbent climate champion Mayor Tim Keller. During Mayor Keller’s tenure, Albuquerque became the first city in the nation to adopt the Justice40 initiative, set a goal to be net-zero emissions by 2050, and became one of the top 5 solar cities in the country by committing to 100% renewable power in 2025.

Conservation Voters New Mexico is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. The Voting Rights Act marked the culmination of years of struggle by the civil rights movement to put the voting protections contained in the 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution, adopted in 1868 and 1870 respectively, into statute.
