On April 8th, President Trump issued an unprecedented executive order declaring “all State [sic] and local laws” dealing with “‘climate change’ or involving ‘environmental, social, and governance’ initiatives, ‘environmental justice,’ carbon or ‘greenhouse gas’ emissions, and funds to collect carbon penalties or carbon taxes.” It instructs the US Attorney General to report back to the President within 60 days detailing actions taken under the EO and any additional Presidential or legislative action necessary to halt enforcement of any offending laws.

On March 12, Lee Zeldin, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), announced he was gutting 31 EPA rules. In doing so, he reframed the purpose of the EPA saying the agency’s mission is to “lower the cost of buying a car, heating a home and running a business.” There was no mention of environmental protection in the Environmental Protection Agency’s new mission.

(Feb. 12, 2025) – A diverse set of more than 100 environmental, health, and public interest groups today sent an open letter calling on governors across the U.S. to maintain support for clean trucks policies, amidst backlash from some corners of the trucking industry. The Advanced Clean Truck (ACT) standards are poised to create billions of dollars in economic, environmental, and public health benefits in the 11 states that have adopted the program.

New Mexico is a national leader in natural gas production. Liquified natural gas, or LNG for short, is a supercooled form of the fossil fuel that allows it to be more readily stored and transported. New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, three tribal nations, and Baja California recently signed an agreement to increase LNG exports to Asian markets. If approved, this could have far-reaching consequences for state and local energy security, climate goals, and public health.

On November 21, the Public Regulation Commission (PRC) will meet to hear public comments on a proposed rulemaking to take the next step to ensure New Mexico’s rural electricity providers generate electricity sourced by renewable energy. New Mexico has 19 rural electric cooperatives (co-ops) statewide, which provide electricity to over 434,000 households. The proposed rulemaking, Renewable Energy for Rural Electric Cooperatives, aims to set standards for rural co-ops to provide 40% renewable energy by 2025, 50% by 2030, and at least 80% by 2050.
