CVNM Statement in Response to EPA Announcement Gutting Endangerment Finding

Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the agency is proposing a draft rule eliminating the endangerment finding and repealing all resulting greenhouse gas emissions regulations for motor vehicles and engines, in particular the Clean Car and Truck Standards.

Conservation Voters New Mexico Condemns Final Budget Reconciliation Bill

President Trump’s budget bill cleared the House on a final and narrow vote of 218-214, concurring with changes made in the U.S. Senate earlier this week. All of the House Democrats and two Republicans, Representative Fitzpatrick (PA) and Representative Massie (KY) voted “no.” The legislation now heads to Trump’s desk for signing, despite widespread backlash and the legislation’s numerous devastating provisions and tremendous fiscal impact. Conservation Voters New Mexico Issues Statements on U.S. Senate Passage of Reconciliation Bill

July 1st 2025, the U.S. Senate voted narrowly to pass President Trump’s tax reconciliation package, with Vice President Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The controversial legislation follows weeks of deliberations and has received broad opposition from the public over harmful provisions to cut medicaid funding, gut resources for popular renewable energy and manufacturing projects, and fast-track extractive industry. The legislation now goes back to the U.S. House for concurrence.

EPA Administrator Repeals Essential Rules on Carbon & Mercury Emissions

SANTA FE – June 11th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it would roll back two critical standards for power plant pollution. The standards – for existing coal and new gas-fired power plants – regulate mercury, other toxic air pollution, and carbon emissions. The proposed changes would go into effect later this year.

House Disapproves California’s Clean Air Act Waiver Allowing State Clean Vehicle Standards

May 2, 2025

On Wednesday and Thursday April 30th and May 1st 2025, the House improperly used the 1996 Congressional Review Act (CRA) to disapprove California’s waiver under the Clean Air Act to set clean vehicle standards. The standards are: Advanced Clean Cars II and Advanced Clean Trucks, to increase the sale of zero-emission electric vehicles, and the Heavy-Duty Omnibus standard for nitrogen oxides emissions from heavy-duty trucks, which can form smog and contribute to asthma and respiratory infections. The Senate will take up the CRA joint resolutions next.

Federal Government Attacks Foundation of Civil Rights in America

On April 23rd, the White House issued a series of executive orders. The last order – Restoring Equality of Opportunity and Meritocracy – removed specific language in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act on discrimination in programs or activities receiving federal funding. Title VI is a foundational component of environmental justice because the prohibition on discrimination in federally funded programs extends to environmental regulations and projects.
